Carlos Coimbra [UC Merced] Abstract: The Solar Forecasting Laboratory at the University of California Merced has collected over 15 months of high quality horizontal and direct normal irradiance measurements at different wavelengths (UV, IR and visible) with the primary objective of developing, calibrating and benchmarking novel and more accurate forecasting models for solar irradiance at the ground level. Without effective forecasting methodologies, neither solar nor wind power plants cannot be effectively connected to the power grid, which presents a major obstacle for high-penetration utilization of intermittent sources. We will discuss different strategies for solar forecasting for both short- and long-term, high spatial and temporal resolution, and forecasting for different solar applications. We will also present a hybrid (GA/ANN) SSL (Stochastic, Self-Learning) methodology that yields very promising results for modeling and forecasting the solar resource, as well as some recent results of the application of our forecasting methodology to model the power output of UC Merceds 1 MW solar farm (SunPower 1-axis TPV).
www.SolarEnergyGuide.net – Low Cost Homemade Solar Panels – Your Home Energy Solution on a Shoestring! Many homeowners would love to be able to install their own low cost homemade solar panels and cut down on their monthly electricity bills. Wouldn’t you? A growing number of people have already done just that and they are proof that this is a simple and effective method of saving money. Things to Consider when Installing A Home Solar Power System If you want to harness the sun’s power, it is best if your home faces south. A roof that faces south and receives direct and unobstructed sunlight would be the ideal place to install your solar panels. If this is not feasible for some reason, however, you can always install them in a part of your backyard that receives direct sunlight as well. There are ready-made solar panel kits for sale on the market. But typically costing 00 or more these kits are often beyond the budget of most homeowners, especially with the current state of the economy. A far less expensive way to harness free energy from the sun is to build your own low cost solar power system. You will find a great number of instructional guides online that will walk you through the entire process. Even if you have never attempted any DIY projects before, you are sure to find these instructions easy to understand and follow. Within a few days, you should have your own homemade solar power system operational. The best thing about building your own solar panels is that …
www.solardave.com This is my 8th video interview with Erik Bowman Regional Sales Manager of Akeena Solar out of Denver Colorado. solardave: Will The Price of Solar Panels Come Down Anytime Soon? Erik Bowman: That is an interesting question and I don’t want to create and false expectations of clients, because yes over time as manufacturing ramps up there are companies all over the world making panels. As manufacturing ramps up, as demand increases the prices for panels should drop and it has dropped over time and we predict it will drop in the future. At this time though the subsides in Colorado cover 50% to 60% of the cost of the system and even at that at cutting the cost at half is now that is even viable verses standard electricity. Even as the cost of the panel drops and what happens historically looking at German New York and California as the models the most mature solar economies in the world rebates drop over time as the cost to install goes down the rebates are there to make it make sense as the technology catches up. So it will probably be 10 years, that is a total guess you would have to ask people that know more than me before the cost of a solar power system on its own without any subsides make equivalent and viable economic sense. Nobody can predict the future don’t know what is going to happen. Right now with the rebates in place and you are installing a system that will produce electricity for 30 years at 7.5 cents a kilo watt hour it costs you 11.5 …
Over the past decade, China has become the world’s leading manufacturer of solar energy technologies; China’s solar manufacturers have helped drive down the cost of solar power around the world with their large-scale production facilities and solar panel exports. In October, climateworks traveled to China to get a sense of the scale of China’s solar manufacturing efforts and talk to some local experts about China’s goals for dramatically scaling up its domestic deployment of solar energy technologies.
Feb. 4, 2010: Humanity emits more carbon into the atmosphere than natural processes are able to remove – an imbalance with negative consequences. Carbon Cycle 2.0 is a Berkeley Lab initiative to provide the science needed to restore this balance by integrating the Labs diverse research activities and delivering creative solutions toward a carbon-neutral energy future.

www.solardave.com solardave: Please tell me about your solar panel system and how you saved some money? Adam Stevenson: The total of the system and materials was K. I ended up spending about another 00 in permit fees and a structural engineer and 0 for an electrician, several hundred dollars for a guy to come help me out for the two afternoons he spent with me. Xcel (Energy) gave me 538 rebate. Fix cost based on the number of kilowatts you are installing and has nothing to do with how much you pay the permit office or the electrician. My final cost after rebate was 37. (solardave note: that is cheap!) I started my research in solar probably about a year before I actually installed it went and got a couple of bids from some of the local solar people both from contractors that my friends have used as well as just searching the internet and while talking to one of the guys I find of developed a good feeling from him, and I asked the question “Would it be possible to do some of the work myself” and kind of learn along the way he said “Sure I absolutely support the do-it-yourself-er (DIY) so I said why don’t you throw me bids, what it would cost just come home and have solar one day and what it would cost to have it done where I do some or all the work myself. And throw them both to me and I said let’s try the second one. The guys name is Steve Cross from Sun Spot Solar. I gave him my electric bills and said this is how much I think I need to generate and he …
In the United States the number of people opting to invest in the installation of solar panels for use in their homes is increasing on a daily basis. Nonetheless, most people are still drawing their electricity supply from the grid. The reason for this is that they are under the impression the initial outlay involved with installing solar panels may not be easily recovered at a later date. This article should help you to decide if such an investment is worthwhile or whether the solar costs are really too high for the average American.
On And Off the Grid The bare truth of the matter is that the costs of home solar panels vary so much. From one manufacturer to another the price fluctuates and, of course, the number of panels you need to have installed and whether you will be living on or off the grid makes a vast difference to the sum you have to outlay. For example, if it is your intention to stay on the grid and only heat your water using solar panels the cost will be anything up to $10,000. On the other hand if living entirely off the grid is your aim, the solar cost of your home solar panels installation is likely to be quite a lot higher. Additionally you will have to buy solar batteries so the energy you have can be stored until the time you need to use it.
Half a Dozen of One and Six of the Other The fact that most solar panels come with a guaranteed lifespan of either twenty or twenty five years would indicate that those people thinking home solar panel costs are too expensive, are incorrect. It is easy to work out an average of how many kilowatts of energy you would use over this period of time and, therefore, you can calculate what your energy supply will cost. This usually compares pretty well with living on the grid, the fundamental difference, of course, is the clean and environmentally friendly way in which solar energy works. To the contrary, the burning of fossil fuels damages the ozone layer and to add to this, we are also starting to see fossil fuel supplies running out.
Prices of Solar Power Will Eventually Drop
If we listen to what the Prometheus Institute tells us, as more and more silicone is synthesized, the cost of home solar panel installation and operation is likely to be on a steady decline in the future making it an affordable alternative for many American families.
For the time being, though, the cost of living off the grid is going to get higher. The increase in electricity bills we have seen over recent years is a trend that’s likely to get higher and continue to do so as the level of readily available fossil fuel drops. How to Finance Your Solar Panels Installation Even though the costs of installing home solar panels are high and not easily affordable in a lump sum, there are finance options open to the majority of people. This affords consumers the luxury of being able to spread the initial cost over various amounts of time by paying a fixed monthly installment. Some states even offer up to $2,000 by way of Federal Tax Rebate for going ahead and having solar panels installed in your home.
